How Artificial Intelligence Shapes Commerce in China

Damian Maib, our founder and CEO, analyses the diverse applications of AI technology in Chinese e-commerce

According to Maib, China's technological leadership is rooted instate support for artificial intelligence (AI), driving not only industrygiants like Alibaba and Tencent but also inspiring other sectors to embrace AIutilization.

E-commerce platforms such as Taobao, Tmall, JD, and Douyin employ AI for personalized marketing based on purchasing behavior, benefiting from looser data protection regulations and a greater affinity for e-commerce compared to Europe.

In logistics, AI optimizes inventory and deliveries. Alibaba's Cainiao employs AI to manage orders and enhance delivery processes. Particularly valuable is AI's role in predictive analytics, optimizing inventory based on demand, sales trends, supplier performance, and predicting future demand.

AI also plays a role in the shopping experience. Retailers experiment with AI-powered technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and VirtualReality (VR), especially during COVID-19. On Tmall, customers can virtually tryout products. AI analyzes store traffic and customer behavior to optimize layouts and product placements. AI facial recognition enables personalized shopping experiences.

To summarise, AI improves customer service, streamlines the supply chain and offers personalised experiences for businesses in China. Whether AI can replace human capabilities like creativity is still an open question, as Maib has pointed out.
